YES! Day Volunteer
What You Need to Know
-
Our YES! program is a middle-school hands-on learning experience that runs roughly from 8-11:30am. Note: Each school sets a different start time for their YES! Day. Please check the specific time on the event webpage for the school where you are volunteering.
-
Volunteers will be paired up and assigned to a classroom to deliver one 30-minute activity to four separate groups of students.
-
Volunteers do not need any experience in the session they lead -- they just need a willingness to present the given material to the students.
-
Junior Achievement provides easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions on how to present the activities, as well as a kit with a script to follow and all materials.
-
The students rotate through the activities, volunteers stay in the same classroom presenting their activity to 4 different classes.
-
The teacher stays with their class the entire time.
This video, put together by Victoria Kozlek, 8th grade Computer Science teacher at Hazleton Area School District's Valley Middle School, provides insight into a typical YES! Day. This programming is presented live to students from members of the business community, college students, and other adult volunteers.

This is also a wonderful opportunity for staff members to get out into the community. Several companies use it as a team building exercise, or a way for employees to practice their public speaking and presentation skills to an unintimidating audience of middle schoolers.
