JA Volunteer Finds Delight in Sharing Her Business Experience with Students

Brenda Dryer, vice president of education at Junior Achievement of Central Iowa in Des Moines, shared the story about one of their outstanding volunteers: Barbara Baugh. Barbara is charged with managing the Customer Portfolio Connection at John Deere Financial, but has had many different leadership and management roles at the company.Barbara said that she holds Junior Achievement near and dear to her heart because she has spent more than 150 hours volunteering with JA.

"My time is spent with more than 50 fourth graders each year. Being able to captivate this audience while opening their eyes to possibilities and sharing my business experiences is a pure delight," Barbara said. "To hear a fourth grader say, 'Do you think I can do that?' Each year I return, the previous year's students remember my name--'Ms. Barbara.' Working with youth keeps me focused on what is important and this drives me to do more than is expected."

Barbara said that her life philosophy is no matter what you do in life, always give it your best."I asked myself, 'What makes me the happiest?' The answer is teaching others. Then ask, 'What can I do that will help make a difference?' Take time to give back to the community and plant a seed to help others in seeing and achieving their dream," Barbara concluded.
