JA Students Demonstrate Social Responsibility

Junior Achievement programs empower young people to be socially responsible to think about the welfare of others. Besides learning about financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship in JA classroom sessions, students talk about how members of the business sector can make a difference in the community and the local economy. Even the youngest students learn about quality-of-life issues. Brian Jackson, development manager at Junior Achievement of <http://tulsa.ja.org/> Oklahoma <http://tulsa.ja.org/> , sent in an example of just such an experience.Ms. Lightfoot?s second-grade class at Harry T. Pratt Elementary School in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, participated in JA Our Community. At one session, the JA volunteer, Nathan Woodmansee, discussed the concept of taxes with his 7-year-old students. He asked them what they thought taxes could be used to fund in the community. Mr. Woodmansee was impressed with the answers the class eagerly provided:What should our tax money do for our city?1. Make homes for older people.2. Pay for school supplies and help schools.3. Fix roads.4. Feed poor people or people that are hurt and can?t work.5. Buy clothes for poor people.6. Put the tax money into a lottery.7. Make a giant water fountain.8. Make splash pads.9. Plant more trees.10. Build more schools.11. Build more stores and hotels.12. Buy schools and libraries more books.13. Clean the city.14. Build a children?s home.15. Give away free books."The students came up with these ideas on their own. Ms. Lightfoot just recorded their responses to the question," said Jackson. "The JA volunteer was really impressed with the class?s altruism and concern for people and community issues. Mr. Woodmansee was excited to share the story?and the immediate impact of JA learning?with us."
